CHOICES
from God's Words of Life

Don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
James 4:4

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
Luke 10:38-42

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Ephesians 4:22-24

Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

Be clear minded and self-controlled.
1 Peter 4:7

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:2-3

The Apostle Paul said, "Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial.
1 Corinthians 6:12

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
James 1:5

The Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth.
John 16:13

Jesus said, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done."
John 13:15

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.
Hebrews 11:24-26

Joshua told the Israelites, "If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
Joshua 24:15

JOSHUA 24:15—Free Choice
After all God had done for them, the Israelites still faced a fundamental choice. They could worship the gods their ancestors had served in Egypt or Mesopotamia, they could follow the religious practices of the new land they had entered—or they could follow the God who had freed them from slavery. Joshua knew exactly which direction he and his family would take.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT ON CHOICES
During the same week that the youth group has scheduled to host back-to-back Christmas parties for an orphanage and two nursing homes, a non-Christian friend has invited Andy to go snow skiing.

As a leader of his group, Andy feels responsible to be at the youth functions.

And yet, he remembers how much fun he had the only other time he went skiing.

After a lot of prayer and thought, he decided to turn down the invitation.

"When I asked myself, 'What would Jesus do in this situation?' everything became crystal clear."

Perhaps the best way to figure out what Jesus would want you to do is to look at how he made his decisions.

"Jesus gave them this answer: 'I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.'" (John 5:19-20).

His secret? Because of his close, moment-by-moment relationship to his heavenly Father (and his commitment to do what was right), Jesus always made the right choices.
