FAILURE

Luke 22:54-62
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep."

John ends his book with a moving scene in which Jesus spoke to Peter and "the disciple whom Jesus loved," presumably John himself. Jesus asked Peter the same question three times, a painful reminder of Peter's three denials of him. But this reinstatement helped embolden Peter to become on of the early church's most fearless spokesmen.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT ON FAILURE
Why is it that sin is so hard to overcome?
When Paul was trying to be a good person (by keeping all the law) in his own strength, he was ultimately defeated by the sin problem. Although his intentions were good, he was attempting to win the battle over sin by his own plan and ability. There is only one solution to that kind of struggle. Paul concludes at the end, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to Godthrough Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:24-25).
The very best proof of the Christian faith is a believer with a changed life. Paul calls Christians to "count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus" (Romans 6:11), and he wrote as if this were really possible!
Conflict won't disappear completely yet, says Paul, for we are part of a "groaning," imperfect creation (Romans 8:18-25). But with God working for us, we can be more than conquerors, and one day God will make all of creation perfect again. That promise should assure us that nothing can separate us from God's love (Romans 8:38-39).
