Marriage Improves Us
By Will Willimon

It's clear that the Christian Faith demands change, but faith never begins in change. It begins in the devastating experience of God's graciousness toward us. The message of the cross is that God takes us before we change. Christians have found that we can't be in the presence of God's sacrificial love and not change. The same is true for the marriage relationship.

If someone asked you if being married has changed you, you would have to say, "Well, yes. My spouse has made me see things differently. He or she has told me where I've gone wrong. He or she has made me a better person." Being married changes us, not because being changed is our goal, but because of who we are in relationship with them. When someone truly loves and accepts you, your defenses go down and you're more likely to change.

Marriage Builders
•How has your relationship with God changed you?
•How has being married to your spouse made you a better person?
