Not Another Research Paper!
Christy Simon

I listened halfheartedly as my comparative politics teacher explained the plan for the coming weeks. My eyes began to wander down the syllabus, stopping abruptly under the section, "Assignments and Tests." There it was, the sentence I dreaded: "All students will be required to complete one research paper."

"Oh, no!" I groaned under my breath.

If you're like me, research papers can seem overwhelming. But as I've labored over research projects, I've also learned a few things that have actually helped make the work a little more tolerable. And, at times, even enjoyable. Give 'em a try:

If possible, choose a subject you really, really like.
Find a topic that appeals to you—one you won't get tired of until after you've written the paper. Take, for example, the comparative politics paper I mentioned above. I decided to do my assignment on Australian politics because one of my friends recently spent six months "down under." It made the whole project a lot more enjoyable. It also gave my friend and I a lot to talk about!

Even if your teacher assigns a specific topic, don't be afraid to ask for an "exception." Sure, she may say no. But if she says yes, you'll be glad you asked.

Get all the specifics and instructor's special directions as early as possible.
I'll always remember the teacher who didn't tell us how she wanted the end notes written until the day before the paper was due. (Talk about a late night! ) Early on, even before you go to the library, find out about length, style, choice of topic(s), number and type of required sources, etc.

Stay organized.
Don't crowd your notes into your regular class notebook. Instead, pick up a binder or folder just for this project. Use it to store your notes, note cards, references and other research materials. And always write the source somewhere on a note card. Staying neat and organized will save you lots of hassle and frustration.

Try extra-hard to enjoy yourself.
Sure, you need to please the teacher with your work. But you also need to please yourself. So try to choose an exciting topic and pour your heart into the paper. You just might have a little fun—and earn a decent grade in the process!
