Everybody loves an underdog—a bench warmer who somehow becomes a star. Audio Adrenaline's new album, Underdog (ForeFront), set to release September 14, celebrates this kind of life lived against the odds.

Underdog is a collection of tunes for people who've seen their share of defeats—with Jesus as the ultimate example of an unexpected winner. (The guys got that idea from the very cool book, The Jesus I Never Knew, by former Campus Life editor Philip Yancey.) In the title track, lead singer Mark Stuart talk-sings: "Been beat up/been broken down/nowhere but up/when you're facedown/on the ground/I'm in last place/if I place at all/ but there's hope for this underdog!"

On this fifth release, Audio A's music returns to those happier "Big House" days, a switch from the intensity found on Some Kind of Zombie. Some songs, like the folksy, funky "Get Down" (rumored to be the new concert fave) sound like they're influenced by bands like OMC, Sublime and Sugar Ray. But Underdog features other sounds, too, like a swingin', rockabilly version of "DC-10," the first single off Audio A's self-titled debut CD.

Watch for a major tour from Audio Adrenaline in the spring. —Martin Cockroft
