Virtual Play with Audio A! Campus Life goes to DisneyQuest with these underdogs. by Martin Cockroft

"I have to say this is the best interview ever!" Audio Adrenaline guitarist Tyler Burkum jokes.
The band members have just filed into the back of a Dodge Caravan, and now Tyler, drummer Ben Cissel and bassist Will McGinnis are talking ad lib into my hand-held tape recorder. Lead singer Mark Stuart sprawls out on the rear bench seat, stocking cap pulled over his eyes.
"Whasssup?" he keeps repeating. "Whasssup?"
As we pull onto Interstate 94, the guys thumb through copies of Campus Life's latest issue.
"So I was reading Campus Life magazine the other day," Ben says to the tape recorder. "I have to say, that's a great magazine."
"The best magazine ever!" Tyler adds.
Audio Adrenaline is playing Chicago tonight, headlining a tour with Raze, Fono and Canadian newcomer Riley Armstrong (see page 28). This morning, we're headed downtown to Disney Quest, a four-story, indoor theme park with a nod toward virtual reality. Take the park's roller coaster "CyberSpace Mountain" (remember Disney World's Space Mountain?). It's not actually a roller coaster, but a cylinder-shaped tank that shakes, spins and drops to simulate a real coaster.
CyberSpace Mountain is the first ride the band tries. Will and Tyler go first, on a medium-speed "track." Then it's Ben and Mark's turn.
"They're going on the sickest, highest level!" someone shouts.
After taking the wild ride, Mark looks a little queasy.
"I feel like I have a 15-pound burrito in my stomach," he says.
Later, the guys contort digital images of their faces at the "Magic Mirror," adding elongated tongues and fake eyeballs. At the "Invasion," Tyler, Will and I hop into a mobile pod (I'm driving again) to eradicate some extraterrestrial scum, and end up getting cooked in a virtual lava pit. Luckily, we all survive.
After a quick lunch and some old-school arcade action with games like Joust and Pac-Man, we've got to split—Audio Adrenaline gets down for soundcheck in an hour. But as we exit through the gift shop, Mark decides to have a T-shirt pressed with the band's picture on it.
"This is so cool," he says. "I'm going to wear this tonight."
