Where's Adam's Rib?
Answer by Jim Burns

Q. In Genesis it says that God took a rib from Adam and created Eve. So why do men and women have the same number of ribs?

A. Actually, I don't have an answer for your question. I'm still trying to figure out why most women cry at romance movies and most men would rather watch sports than dress up for dinner. I'll have to add that to my list of questions for God when I arrive in heaven.

I believe God is our Creator, according to Genesis. I guess if we had creation figured out we'd be as smart as God. Obviously we aren't—which brings up a broader question: Is it possible to commit to following God when we don't understand everything about him? I believe it is because of a word we use all the time but don't think about much. The word is faith. The best definition for it I can find is in Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Basically, faith is putting your trust in something, or in God's case someone, you've not seen.

So I can't answer your question, but I'm very comfortable not knowing the answer. As I look at God's character, I can trust him to do what is best for us and pretty much leave it at that. This doesn't mean that other creation questions won't have clear-cut answers. Just know that it's OK to not know everything about why God does things one way and not another. In faith, you can still commit your life to his care and lordship.
