It's Your Turn
I'm Too Selfish!

How can I live like a Christian? Part of me wants to stay away from the world's bad influences so I won't give in to temptation. But the Bible says we should be a part of the world too. How can I find the balance between being in the world but not of the world? —Eric

It's like it says in the old hymn: When you fix your eyes upon Jesus, the things of this world grow strangely dim. Slowly, you'll understand not only who you are, but who God wants you to be. You also need to be open with your parents and Christian friends. They'll help keep you accountable. Stay true to your values and morals. If you compromise who you are just to fit in to someone else's mold, you'll never be truly satisfied.

Look at Jesus' example. He had a close group of Christian friends. He stayed in constant communication with God. He loved sinners and taught them the truth with compassion. When you're struggling, ask yourself what Jesus would do, then try to do the same.

For me, music has been a good place to find the balance between God and the world. Try to find some good Christian music. That way, you'll be filling your mind with positive ideas that build you up, not pull you down.

Eugene, Oregon

When you come face to face with temptation, ask yourself three questions: 1) If I give in to this temptation, how will it affect my relationship with God? 2) How will it affect my witness to others? 3) What are the consequences? Just stick to your Christian morals and pray for God's help daily. The rest will fall into place from there.

Washington, Pennsylvania

I have a strong Christian friend I hang out with. We face the world together. It's easier to stay strong when you know you're not alone. Even when we're not together, I know I'm still accountable to my friend and to God.

Rhonda Berghoff
Yakima, Washington

It would be really easy to live a Christian life if you could stay away from temptation. But you wouldn't grow in your faith. Your faith gets stronger when you're put through trials and temptations. Pray for strength and live your life so others see Jesus in you.

Seymour, Indiana

Make sure you have friends who will encourage you and build you up. And be active in encouraging others, too. Pray with each other and ask for the strength to walk away from temptation.

I'm very active in my church and my school. The problem is, my life is getting so crowded, I hardly have any free time. But I have a hard time saying no when someone asks me to help out with something. How can I learn to say no and get my life back?—Annie
