"I Hated Myself"
As a high school student, Kara realized she couldn't control the way people thought about her, but she could control something elsethe way she ate. Unfortunately, her eating habits controlled her, and Kara developed an eating disorder, bulimia, that threatened her life.
By the time she was a college freshman, Kara was skipping breakfast and only eating dinner "if my mom made me." Then she'd force herself to throw up.
"I hated what I was doing," she says, "but I thought I had no choice."
On her 20th birthday, Kara and her mom went shopping. In the dressing room, Kara's mom saw her daughter's ribs sticking out, and asked, "Is there something you want to tell me?" Kara broke down, and quickly got the help she needed.
She's now healthy, but admits, "I continue to fight against the thoughts of needing the perfect body to be loved." But a loving family and a commitment to Scripture memorization and prayer have "brought me so much further than I've ever been."

Andy Hunter has a unique mission field: Mainstream clubs and pubs in the United Kingdom. Andy, a DJ, connects with non-Christian students through dance, house and trance music. As students began turning to Christ, Andy wondered, How do we teach them about worship? They've never set foot in a church before. But most of them were into dance music, so we tried to lead worship with the turntables. Check out Andy's new CD, Exodus (Sparrow). More: andyhunter.com. "I Was Worshiped"
Before he was writing songs of worship, Lincoln Brewster got a taste of what it's like to be worshiped.
In 1994, Lincoln was playing guitar with Steve Perry, former lead singer of the '80s supergroup Journey. Lincoln remembers a guitar solo he played at one show: "People were grabbing my legs and everything. It was like they were worshiping all of us on stage. I said, 'Lord, I'm sorry. You're not getting any glory for the gifts you've given me.'"
Lincoln knew something had to change. Despite offers for big bucks from others in the secular music industry, Lincoln took a job at a California church as sound technician and youth worship leader. It was a reality check.
"A year before," says Lincoln, "I had been making tons of money and being waited on hand and foot. And here I was doing sound for weddings and stuff."
During that time, Lincoln drew closer to God and started writing worship music, and now he says he writes to "reflect the true heart of the worshiper."
Lincoln's latest offering is Amazed (Vertical Music). More: lincolnbrewster.com. Crowder House
