Crafting a Rule of Life: An Invitation to the Well-Ordered Way
(IVP, 2012) Stephen A. Macchia
The Facts: Patterned after Benedict's 1,500-year-old Rule of Life, this book provides a template for creating a personal rule. The author describes a Rule of Life as "Spirit-empowered rhythms and relationships" that sustain and nourish life in Christ. The 12 chapters identify the areas of life—desires, time, talents, etc.—that, when submitted intentionally to Christ, contribute to the abundant life Christ promised. Organized as a work-book, each chapter poses thought-provoking questions and leaves room for readers to craft their own Rule of Life.
The Slant: Many are familiar with the spiritual disciplines as an important component of spiritual growth. But relatively few have utilized a Rule of Life, despite its historic importance in the monastic traditions. The concept of the Rule could be especially powerful for new converts and younger Christians who may have no knowledge of how to live the Christian life. Macchia also seems to anticipate those who cry "legalism," framing the ancient practice as an adaptable invitation, a way of growing into God's grace.
