I look for disciples who bear fruit and are consistent in the way they use their time and talents. But I always look for confirmation from other people I trust before moving forward.
I tell prospective leaders I have seen their leadership capacity. As a pastor, I must speak into their lives so they can begin sharpening their calling. They trust me because I have a track record in the community and in Chicago. This lays a foundation so that God can open their hearts to his guidance.
Next, I empower them to develop that calling. I give them small tasks at first. I might put them in charge of a small group. I give them some people to lead. Then I follow up with them to see how things have gone. If they've done well in the smaller tasks, I move them up to bigger leadership roles.
