Trend Watch

Perspective on the buzz

A recent Christianity Today report covers the state of big-church finance in Brazil. It's a good time to be a prosperity preaching Protestant in the traditionally Catholic nation, with one leading celebrity pastor (Edir Macedo of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God) boasting a net worth of $1 billion US. But not everyone is pleased at this version of divine "blessing."

A petition being circulated asks the White House to investigate Macedo, asking for a "probe" into his financial practices.

Macedo is far from the only pastor worldwide to draw attention for an exorbitant income or lifestyle. Pastors in Nigeria and the US are drawing increasing ire for their lavish habits as the global economy continues to struggle

A recent Forbes report fills in even more details of Brazil's big money ministers.
