Trend Watch

Perspective on the buzz

In a, widely publicized change of stance, prominent Republican congressman Rob Portman recently announced that he now supports gay marriage.

In a piece for The Columbus Dispatch, Portman writes "I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn't deny them the opportunity to get married."

Portman cites his conservativism as a motivation in his change of stance on the issue, saying "We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people's lives." He also cites the influence of Scripture in his change of heart.

Portman's reversal coincides with a recent LifeWay poll showing that most Americans see same-sex marriage as both a civil rights issue, and "inevitable."
