Perspective on the buzz

Yes, contrary to the common belief that "nobody reads anymore," people (particularly adolescents!) are still reading books. What books are most popular? According to Barna, books that have been adapted into movies are widely read. Women gravitate toward the Twilight series, The Hunger Games, and 50 Shades of Grey, while men are reading The Hobbit and the Song of Fire and Ice series, which inspired the popular Game of Thrones show.

But what book remains the most read? One in five of all American adults have read the Bible from start to finish.

"… the level of engagement with the Bible is enlightening. It is not a surprise that so many practicing Christians report reading their primary sacred text from front to back. It is surprising that nearly a fifth of people who claim another faith than Christianity and nearly a tenth of people with no faith claim to have done the same. It suggests Christians should not assume non-Christians are categorically unfamiliar with their sacred scripture."
