Denominations on the Decline
Recent reports confirm that mainline denomination membership continues to fall. According to The Christian Post, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) dipped below the two million mark in 2011. Sheldon Sorge, pastor to Presbytery for the PC (USA) Presbytery of Pittsburgh, attributes this to, "a birthrate well below the threshold of maintaining population." He believes that mainline denominations must, "do a better job of leading our people to grow deeper in their commitment to following Jesus Christ."
More recently, the Southern Baptist Convention, America's largest Protestant denomination, has released information showing decline in several key areas, including membership, average attendance, baptisms, and giving. SBC Executive Committee President Frank Page says, "my heart breaks when we realize the overall decline in our numbers."
