Perspective on the buzz

Liberty High School valedictorian Roy Costner ignored school board rules for Pickens County, South Carolina by saying the Lord's Prayer during his commencement speech. This has ignited yet another discussion on the topic of religious liberty. In this case, the question is over whether the Lord's prayer counts as "sectarian" or "non-sectarian," since no Christian tradition existed when Jesus introduced it.

When asked why he chose to recite the prayer during his speech, Costner told CNN, "I wanted to stand up for God." He continued, "Taking prayer out of schools is the worst thing we could do."
