Trend Watch

Perspective on the buzz

As the U.K. considers a blanket "opt-in" ban on online porn (following similar attempts by Iceland and India), debates of freedom, virtue and censorship are raging on both sides of the pond. The issue is expanding into international politics as well, as the software necessary for the ban comes from Chinese sources whose track record with information freedom and human rights is not worthy of emulation.

The conversation is a tough one, of civic morality and personal freedom. But it offers a lot of food for thought for pastors. What's the relationship between freedom and societal health? Where should censorship lines fall, and how should we decide them? How can we keep our children from accessing exploitative content on the web? And ultimately, what's the role of spiritual leaders here?

Stay tuned. This is a trend worth watching.
