Your weekly guide to the Bible and prayer Sunday, November 4, 2007

"Perseverance has created greatness much more than talent ever has or will," insists Bill Hull, a contributor to this week's devotionals who, in high school, was bent on winning a collegiate basketball scholarship.
"I remember sending to a catalog company for leg weights that I could wear to increase my vertical jump. I was so excited when they arrived. I ripped open the box, strapped them on, and headed for the garage. Day after day, I'd hold a barbell of weights on my shoulders and with the weights strapped to my ankles, I'd do jumping scissors, 25 repetitions, followed by 25 more and 25 more. It hurt as my feet pounded into the cinder floor in that old windowless garage. After 30 minutes with sweat pouring off of me, I'd run out into my back yard to see if I could jump higher. Weeks went by, and I couldn't really tell, but I kept at it because I believed it would work, and my vision was clear: I needed to jump higher in order to win a college athletic scholarship. After a few months, I noticed that I was stronger and reaching two or three inches higher. I never became a great leaper, but I was able to play much better because I did this exercise."
This week is about the stick-to-itiveness and patience that results when you focus on God's promises.
Until next week,
