"You yourselves are our witnesses," wrote Paul (1 Thessalonians 2:10), "that we were pure and honest and faultless toward all of you believers." That is what made his ministry so compelling. On the one hand, the tough-in-mind-and-character apostle could point to his affectionate and sacrificial conduct: "We were gentle among you as a mother feeding and caring for her own children" (2:7). On the other hand, he could speak of his educational role of word and example: "We treated each of you as a father treats his own children" (2:11).
This week we'll focus on the power of a positive example, in your family and beyond.

John Wooden is the only person inducted into both the basketball Players' and Coaches' Halls of Fame. Before he retired in 1976, his UCLA Bruins had won 10 NCAA basketball championships. In one 1971-to-'74 stretch, they won 88 games straight!
"There has never been another coach like Wooden," wrote Rick Reilly in Sports Illustrated, "quiet as an April snow and square as a game of checkers; loyal to one woman, one school, one way."

I am here to tamper with a masterpiece, or better said, to share with you a rather different reading of Luke 2:1-7, one solidly grounded in the facts, but nowhere represented in Christmas carols and pageants. I must tell you that I have heard endless sermons on how there was "no room in the inn" and how it was typical of a cold, fallen world to cast the holy family and Jesus out into the cold, and so on, often preached with great fervor but producing no ferment at all.

As a faithful church member, he suddenly realizes that he's relegated God to explicitly religious activities. And he asks himself, "Does God care about my profit margins and cash flow statements on Monday as much as he cares about my offering on Sunday?"
