 Welcome

Mary DarrMy son dreams of becoming a pilot when he grows up. During his preschool years, he turned our family room into an airplane by placing two child-sized chairs in the "cockpit" area, with passenger seating for me and our dog on the couch. He was the pilot, and a stuffed animal served as his co-pilot.

He began his adventures in flight by asking, "Mom, where do you want to fly to today?" I normally selected a tropical destination. After checking our seatbelts, he prepared for take-off by making loud rumbling engine noises and crackling radio transmissions. As the plane took off, he'd rock back in forth in his chair and laugh with enjoyment. And I took a much-needed break on the couch.

Enjoying fun-filled adventures inside the house can help break the monotony for everyone during cabin fever months. In "The Melbourne Flight," Emma Strong, an imaginative mom from Australia, describes the surprising trip she took with her preschooler on a pretend afternoon flight.

Creating an inviting and loving atmosphere for your kids is another important aspect of parenting. In "Communicating with A.W.E., Affection, Warmth and Encouragement," Dr. Jim Burns shares three principles you can use to develop a positive environment in your home. And he lists the top five things to help bring affection, warmth, and encouragement into your world today in "The A.W.E. To-Do List for Confident Parents."

Also in this issue,
Blessings,
Mary Darr

Creating an atmosphere of acceptance and love for your kids is an important aspect of parenting.

My mom probably never read a parenting book in her life. She was married to an alcoholic, and her father died of cirrhosis of the liver. Life was not easy for her, but somehow she discovered how to create a home environment filled with affection, warmth and encouragement (A.W.E.).
