Coach Rick made a lasting impression on me one day as he coached our son's preschool soccer game. Three 4-year-old boys ran and jumped on the field, stopping every so often to point at the dogs or to look up at cloud formations. But one other little boy just stood motionless on the sidelines and stared at the commotion. Coach Rick ran over and took little Nathan's hand and said, "Come on buddy, let's play some soccer." During the next 15 minutes, Coach Rick held Nathan's hand and ran down the field with him. He helped push Nathan's leg to kick the ball inbounds from the sidelines and gave him high-fives.
Following the game, the boys chased Coach Rick and squirted him and each other with water. My son ran over to Nathan, who again stood motionless. And he squirted him! Nathan's face lit up with a big smile, and then he laughed and laughed. His mother's eyes filled with tears. For one moment in time, Nathan, who has autism, was one of the boys.
In the "The Princess or the Pain?" MOPS International President Naomi Cramer Overton says, "When we lessen others' pain, we live out our purpose and find intimacy with the One who affirms we belong to him." Look for an opportunity to make someone happy, even if it's only temporary.
