One of my mom-friends told me recently about an interesting twist on the time-out chair. In her son's kindergarten class, the teacher uses a "better choice" chair. Students who disrupt the class or who are caught lying sit in the "better choice" chair until they can tell the teacher what they did to get themselves in trouble and how they could've made a better choice.
My friend said this method corrects kids in a more positive and constructive manner. Instead of sitting in a time-out feeling resentful and angry, children learn to process and own their behavior and think about solutions to correct their errors.
In their "Raising Great Kids" column "The Truth of the Matter," Dr. John Townsend and Dr. Henry Cloud discuss the importance of teaching kids to tell the truth. Honesty is truly one of the bedrocks to success in relationships. Townsend and Cloud describe three important concepts when helping kids learn about honesty: teach, model, and discipline. And they offer practical ways to take corrective action when you catch your child in a lie.
Be sure to read this issue's "Artist Spotlight" with singer/songwriter Mark Schultz. See why this Christian artist expresses gratitude to his birth mother for giving him up for adoption.
