Our son didn't know a stranger in the early years of his life. As a baby, he loved to flash smiles at anyone we passed. When he started talking, he'd say, "Hi," to everyone he saw and would talk with whoever would listen.
Because he was so sociable, I worried he wouldn't understand the concept of a "stranger." So we began talking about staying safe and being careful around people we don't know. One day while on vacation, we were riding on a tram with another family. The grandmother said, "Hello," to us. Our son quickly said, "Hello," with a beaming smile. Later on in their conversation she asked him if he knew what a stranger was. He said, "Yes, a stranger is someone who can take you."
In "Raising Great Kids," Drs. Townsend and Cloud discuss how to help children understand the difference between people who are safe to be around and those who aren't. They offer ideas on how to teach your children about strangers in a positive manner and how to give your children tools to use when faced with uncertain situations.
Keeping up with mortgage payments is a struggle for many families, as evidenced by soaring foreclosure rates. In "Losing My Place," author Cindy Sumner shares the story of two families who lost their homes to foreclosure. She gives some practical steps for avoiding foreclosure and also talks about getting ready to buy a home.
