While walking to pick up my son in front of his school recently, I saw three police cars parked in the pick-up zone. What in the world was happening? Gone was the usual chaotic scene of hundreds of parents picking up their lively kids along the sidewalk. The principal stood near the front doors and told parents to get inside the building quickly.
A short time later, the details trickled in. There'd been a burglary in the neighborhood, and two of the three suspects were already caught. The third was on the loose. And the police wanted the kids to stay locked in their classrooms while the parents waited inside. They hoped to apprehend the suspect in the cordoned-off area. While I felt secure inside the building and knew my child was okay, I also felt anxious and wanted to go home to our safe haven. About an hour later, as my son and I were walking to the car, he said, "Mom, we had two drills today, a fire drill and a burglar drill. And I'm ready to go home."
The November/December issue of MomSense explores what makes a house a home. MOPS Mom Kimberly Garrow grew up in a divorced home and yearned to live in a secure, loving environment. In "There's No Place Like Home" she reveals how she's learning to create a safe, caring haven for her six children.
Don't miss my "Up Close & Personal" interview with Laurie Smith, the Trading Spaces interior designer and mother of two preschoolers. Laurie talks about her hit TV show, the challenges of motherhood and how her lifelong dream came true on God's terms.
Also in this issue,
Blessings,
