The Love of My Life
Hey Dad,
Two days ago, my wife accused me of having a love affair with my email. Now, she didn't say that in as many words…she really said, "You care more about checking your email than you do about how I feel.
That's ridiculous…I mean…I love my wife. She's my best friend and partner in life. My email is, well, just a way of reaching dads all across the country.
It's true that I do enjoy turning on my computer, the adrenaline rush as it boots up, and the tingles that race up my spine as the machines talk back and forth in their electronic grunts and squeals. Oh, and whose heart doesn't quicken at the melodic 'ding' announcing that I have mail in my mailbox?
But a love affair with my email? No way!!!
OK, so maybe checking it a dozen times a day is a little overboard…and…I guess I do think about email even when my wife is pouring out her guts about how she feels drained and overwhelmed.
Truth is, I feel my email calling to me even as I type.
You know what?
She's right. I am having an affair with email.
I've been pouring my thoughts, time, and emotions into a stupid machine until my wife feels like I care more about email than I do her. That's an affair. We men are prone to having affairs with our jobs, golf, cars, finances, hobbies, lawns, or friends.
We've made our wives feel like they're number #2 on our love list.
So what are we gonna do? We need to be drastic…like cutting out (or way back) those things that steal our affections from our wives. I know what I need to do…now, I just need to do it. In fact, I'm fighting the urge to check my email right now. Earlier, I walked by the machine and had to look away just so I wouldn't hit the 'check mail' button. It's killing me, but I'm 'da dad.
