Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly
Love Is More than a Fig Newton

Hey Dad,

Well, I counted my non-throwing-up chickens before they hatched. Last week I assumed the tide had turned after only one Wilson up-chucker. Now five or six up-chuckers later, I'm still not sure we're out of the woods yet.

It sure throws a kink into our plans, especially considering today is Valentine's Day—the official day to make sure that each member of your family knows just how much you love them.

It's usually the day when men make a mad dash to Wal-Mart or Walgreen's on their way home from work to fight over the six remaining Valentine's cards and grab a heart-shaped box of whatever is left on the shelf (nothing says, "I'm madly in love with you" like a heart-shaped box of Fig Newtons).

I know it's hard to find the time to pick out something special for the persons we love the most—although we do seem to make time to find the coolest leatherette cell-phone holder on the market.

Maybe during your lunch hour today you could run out and pick up something for your bride that says, "You're still the love of my life."

Or better yet, as soon as you finish this e-mail, grab a piece of paper from your desk, an old French-fries box from the floor of your truck, or a scrap of paper from the trash, and write out all the things you love and appreciate about your wife. Go ahead; be mushy and nostalgic …. like you used to be.

Then find a few more scraps of paper and write a note to each of your children.

I'm telling you, Dad, most wives and children will cherish a note from the man in their life forever—and it's a whole bunch better than a heart-shaped box of Fig Newtons.

You 'da Dad,
Todd Wilson
