Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly
Houston, We Have Liftoff … Almost

Hey Dad,

After months of preparation, we're ready to roll … except we don't have an RV. After working for hours trying to solve my taillight issue, I made an appointment for this past Monday at the RV-fixing place.

So on Monday, in the pre-dawn hours, I fired up the FM3 (which purred like a panther) and backed down our long driveway with my son Ben (age 14.8) as my guide. I was just about to pull down the road when Ben, with a smile on his face, ran up to the driver's window.

"You knocked down the mailbox," he said with a little too much levity in his voice.

"Thanks, Ben," I said. "I appreciate you letting me know."

Well, anyway, the RV-fixers quickly found the problems but had to send away for the parts … so here I sit, pacing like a caged lion, planning to leave tonight for our first gig.

But besides that, we're ready to leave—unless you count the fact that we still haven't de-winterized the beast or finished packing her and that Maggie threw up all over her bedroom floor last night, possibly signifying future "episodes" with other family members while on the road.

That's the life of a dad, and my calling. And it's your calling, too. Nothing ever goes like it's supposed to; road trips are never easy; unexpected expenses inevitably arise; kids throw up all over the carpet—but you're still 'da Dad!

So bring it on.

Well, I'd better go and get the RV. Then, the last kick begins, but I'm ready … almost.

As you're tooling down the highway, keep a keen eye out for a big RV with a honkin' big horn and "You 'da Dad" emblazoned across its nose. Honk and make sure you say, "Hey."

You 'da Dad,
Todd Wilson
