Key Bible Verse:

"Should you then seek great things for yourself? Seek them not"

(Jeremiah 45:5). Bonus Reading: Mark 10:35-45

When we were visiting a friend's homestead in the high desert, he pointed out a gnarled juniper tree, the only one in sight. It wasn't much to look at, but it was doing its job—providing shade for a cow or two.

His analogy of blooming where you're planted made me think of another rancher I knew who lived near Lometa, Texas. We used to go into town with him to shop. He'd stop here and there to ask about a sick child or an ailing marriage. Then he'd offer a word of encouragement, share a word of Scripture, and pray if it seemed the thing to do. He didn't foist his faith on anyone, but he always seemed to leave it behind. A tough old fellow, he had about him what Paul would call the "aroma of Christ."

Our fragrance can be long lasting if we stay put in one place, faithful to the task. We all get an occasional yen to move on to bigger things. God's will may be to move on, but I don't think we should move up just for ourselves. We should grow and flourish right where we're planted until God Himself uproots us.

—David Roper in The Strength of a Man

Personal Challenge

Thank God for allowing you to bloom where you have been planted.

Thought to Apply

God is more concerned about who you are than what you do, and He is more concerned about what you do than where you do it.
