Don't Panic!
The Millennium
Steve Hewitt
Monday, November 1, 1999

Key Bible Verse:

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter …

(2 Thessalonians 2: 1-2a). Bonus Reading: Jude 17-21

As I've crossed the nation speaking to churches, it has been sad to see those who've allowed fear and the hype of Y2K doom-and-gloomers to cause panic in their lives. Many have made poor decisions that will affect them financially for years.

I have also been saddened by Christians whose biggest concerns about Y2K are how it might affect their personal comfort or wealth. We are more concerned about ourselves and material things than we are about other Christians dying for Christ and the need for personal evangelism.

One deacon at a church told me that his greatest concern about Y2K is that it would keep the sweatshops in Third World countries from cranking out cheap clothing. He works for a large department store and was greatly concerned that Y2K could slow down production abroad. This kind of greed gave me a sick stomach for the rest of the night!

The good news is that things are calming down. Pastors tell me that the concerned calls are decreasing. And the Christian media are growing strangely quiet.

Personal Challenge:

Pray that God will help you fix your eyes on Him, not on your personal wants.

Thought to Apply:

When people are bewildered, they tend to become gullible.
