You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come

Jesus was telling His disciples [in the Key Bible Verse] that these rumblings and shakings signal the beginning of the end. The end is not yet—but it is drawing closer.

Have you ever driven along a high mountain pass and noticed those warning signs for trucks? A bright yellow sign declares: First Warning. 6% Downgrade Ahead. That's plenty steep—especially for a fully loaded semi. That sign would make any truck driver sit up a little straighter in his cab. You go a little farther and another sign repeats the message: Second Warning. 6% Downgrade Ahead. Trucks Check Brakes. Not long after that you see a sign that says: Runaway Truck Ramp Five Miles Ahead.

You haven't started downhill yet; the terrain is still level. But you've encountered warning after warning that the road ahead plunges steeply.

That's what these warnings of our Lord accomplish. They tell us, "Things may seem smooth and even now, but watch out! You're moving toward the edge. You're approaching a stretch of highway radically different from the one you're traveling right now."
