Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips

Through Pastor Ray Stedman, God brought me from Argentina to the U.S. I knew Ray loved me like a son, and I respected him like a father.

Like many young men who want to serve Christ, I felt a great sense of pride when I gave little messages.

One day Ray wanted to talk to me. He knew I had begun dating Pat, who later became my wife, and had failed to inform a woman I had been dating in Argentina. Many times he had encouraged me to write this woman, but I never did. He brought up the subject again that day.

I said, "Don't worry. When I get back home, I'll talk to a few people and get out of it."

Ray put his arm around me and said, "You know, my son, you really think you can solve any problem with that mouth." I started to object, but he shut me off. "Luis, one of these days you are going to dig a hole so deep with your mouth that not even God will be able to pull you out of it—unless you shape up. You are so proud and cocky that it oozes out of your pores and you don't even realize it!"

When he said that, I knew it was God's voice. Fortunate is the individual who has such friends.
