Key Bible Verse:

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name

(Exodus 20:7). Bonus Reading: Leviticus 24:10-16

One All-Star forward tried to intimidate me. "You think I'm afraid of you?" I asked. "You should be," he answered.

"Man, I'm not afraid of any demon in hell; why should I be afraid of you?"

"I'm tougher than you think."

"So what? My big Brother Jesus watches out for me."

"Come on—let's just play ball."

When someone uses God's name to cuss, often they'll stop when I look their way. Other times I get more demonstrative. Once, when playing the Knicks, one of their stars said "G.D." in anger. "Don't take the Lord's name in vain," I said to him.

That really got him off his game, but I was serious. Players say junk about mamas and sisters to get players off their game. I cherish God's name just as much, so I'm offended when they use it. I say all kinds of things to shut people up:

"God's last name isn't Dammit."

"You actually eat out of the same mouth that just came out of?"

"Why don't you wash your mouth out with soap?"

If they persist, I say, "I rebuke that spirit in the name of Jesus." That generally get's a guy's attention.

Personal Challenge:

Are others deterred from using profanity by the quality of your presence?

Thought to Apply:

What is in the well of your heart will show up in the bucket of your speech.
