Liar No More
This Week's Theme: Honesty
Reggie White with Steve Hubbard
Monday, February 14, 2000

Key Bible Verse: They make ready their tongue like a bow, to shoot lies (Jeremiah 9:3a). Bonus Reading: Jeremiah 9:3-9

"When I was a kid, I used to lie. I didn't stop until after I'd been married for two years. Sara would go to games, ask me why women in the crowd were looking at her. She asked if I knew them, and I said no—which was a lie. Finally, I told her I did know those girls and used to date some of them. It took two years before I realized that lying to your spouse tears her up worse than cheating on her. If I wanted to save my marriage, I had to stop lying to her.

Finally, I realized how much I had sinned and have not told a lie since. Read [today's Bonus Reading] and you'll see just how much God despises liars. Now I'll tell the truth, no matter what. Even if other people can't stand it—even if a little white lie would make them feel better. For instance, many people come up to me and say, "You remember me? You gave me your autograph two years ago when you were at so-and-so." Well, they might have stood in front of me for ten seconds on a day when I signed a thousand autographs. I used to say I remembered them. Now I always tell the truth.

Personal Challenge:
  • Vigilantly resist the temptation to lie for the sake of convenience.

Thought to Apply: Better the ugly truth than a beautiful lie.
