What's the dollar exchange rate today?" I'd ask the manager, when I began in an Argentina bank.

He'd think a while and say, "Tell him it's 45." Later he confidentially explained the scheme. Say a firm bought machinery for $3 million, paying in pesos when the rate was 42. The bank would say, "Today the dollar is worth 45." For every dollar, the bank made three pesos dishonestly besides the commission: 9 million pesos in a 30-minute transaction!

One Sunday afternoon I was preaching outdoors—"If you come to Christ, you'll be clean"—when a little voice said, "Last week you said the exchange rate was 45 when it was really 42. How does that square with your words?"

I was tempted to compromise because I had a widowed mother and family to support. But I went to the manager. "Do we have to cheat this way?"

"What do you mean, cheat?" he said red-faced. "I follow orders. You're just doing what I tell you."

"I just can't do it."

"Look," he bellowed, "you're an employee, not a director. If you can't do it, you've had it!"

I resigned. And the Lord used it to bring me into full-time gospel preaching.
