Nervous about God's Will?
God's Guidance
Saturday, January 1, 2000

Q.Why are we sometimes nervous about God's will?

A. When I was traveling recently, the plane had just pushed away from the gate and was heading toward the runway when we heard an urgent knocking noise below us. A member of the ground crew had inadvertently been locked inside the cargo section. When he realized the cargo doors had closed and the plane was leaving, sheer panic must have struck his heart!

Many think of God's will the same way that crewman thought of the airplane that day. We may believe God wants to take us where we do not want to go. Some of us are sure that if we prayed, "God, I will go anywhere you want me to go," we would find ourselves on the next plane to some remote outpost.

How do you overcome the idea that God's will is what you least desire?

Such an idea makes no sense. After all, if there is not joy in going where He sends us and doing what He asks of us, will we be as successful as He desires us to be? Even when we can't help but dread what lies ahead, He is working in us, conforming us "to will and to act according to his good purpose" (Philippians 2:13).

If we are doing God's will, our work may not always be glorious, but we will feel a deep satisfaction that assures us we are doing the right thing. So go ahead. Pray to do the Father's will. There is nothing to fear. His plans for you are "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).

Suggest a good way to pray about God's will.

"Lord, I'm willing to walk according to Your purpose for my life. I know I'll find both joy and peace as I recognize that You hold my best interests—and my future— in Your hands."
