What Would You Do?
Job
Hopping
As you
read the following situation, consider what you might say to Greg (see tomorrow
for discussion questions).
"I thaw Greftgk tudayf koing intoo thu pathonel garfus."
"You what?"
Todd spits out a mouthful
of toothpaste. "I said, 'I saw Greg today going into the personnel office.'"
Lisa nods knowingly as
she checks her reflection in the mirror for gray hairs. "Yeah, I talked
to Shelby this morning at our women's Bible study. Greg quit Friday at David
Miller & Associates. Got into an argument with one of the VPs and just quit
on the spot."
"I figured as much.
What's thatthe third job he's quit in the past two years?"
"Who can keep track?
I know he was let go when he was working at Bransco. So, it's at least
three, maybe even four different jobs."
"What do you think
is up with that?" Todd muses.
"Maybe he's restless.
Maybe he's lazy or incompetent. I don't know. I just know Shelby is a nervous
wreck. She's really stressed out over their financial situation."
"Well, it's not hard
to see why. I don't get that guy. Remember that one period where he just flat
out refused to look for any job outside of his field of expertise? I mean, I
can understand wanting to do what you're trained to do. But there's also the
issue of providing for your family."
"Well, he's a strange
birdYou know, it's funny how times change. My dad worked for the same company
his whole life."
"My dad changed jobs
once, I think," Todd says. "Imagine that! So, Lisa, if I quit
my job tomorrow with no place else to go, would you freak out?"
Lisa turns and stares at
him. "Don't even joke like that!"
Todd smiles. "I'm
just asking a hypothetical question."
"Yes, I'd freak out!
Letting go of one vine before you've grabbed another one? Just the thought is
enough to make me queasy."
