Hollow Men This Week's Theme: Goal to Go
Monday, April 24, 2000
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: "What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?" (Luke 9:25). Bonus Reading: Psalm 27
"My life has no meaningno purpose," Tom sobbed. "It's as though I've been chasing the wind all these years."
One of Florida's most prominent attorneys, Tom attained the rung on the ladder every young lawyer aspires to. But he found that the ladder reached into clouds of disillusionment. Unfulfilled, and not knowing why, Tom accepted an invitation from a friend to a prayer breakfast.
Maybe God will have some answers, he thought.
What interested Tom most was the peace he saw in some of the men. Over the months that followed, he was surprised to learn these men attributed their sense of peace and purpose to a "personal" relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
"Well, I've been a faithful churchman for over 30 years. Are you trying to tell me I've wasted all those years?"
"Tom, if church has been such an important part of your life, why are we talking about your feelings of emptiness and lack of purpose?"
Tom is not alone. He lived the first 58 years of his life without giving much attention to why he did things. Many, like Tom, are just going through the motions.
