Key Bible Verse: "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money" (Matthew 6:24). Bonus Reading: Isaiah 48:17-19
When Grant, now 56, was in his early twenties, he went to work for a fellow in the outdoor advertising business. Grant did well. But the owner lived for his businessand figured everybody else ought to. If you weren't in the office Monday through Saturday, you weren't a company man. As an incentive, the owner promised the inner circle a significant cut of the profits if he ever sold the company.
Now Grant didn't mind working hard or being well compensated. But he and his wife had a vision for their family that went beyond owning a big house and a couple of new cars. Working every Saturday eliminated any hopes of creating the family environment they envisioned. So Grant resigned.
Grant began his own outdoor company elsewhere. It thrived. But more importantly, he and his wife's vision for their children become a reality.
Grant's former employer finally sold his company. The men who stayed with him all those years received a big check. But most lost their families along the way.
