Brett's Close Call

Key Bible Verse: Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise (Proverbs 20:1). Bonus Reading: Proverbs 23:29-35

Super Bowl champ Brett Favre could have been lost from the world of sports. While undergoing knee surgery in February of '96, Brett Favre suddenly went into seizures that rendered him unconscious. The complication was caused by his combining prescription painkillers and alcohol. While at Green Bay, former quarterback coach Steve Mariucci had warned Favre that continual use of painkillers for injuries should be carefully monitored. Then Mariucci left to coach Cal Berkeley (and later the 49ers). Certain teammates continued to confront Favre, along with girlfriend (now wife) Deanna, who even threatened to take their young daughter and leave.

Favre finally admitted he had an addiction he could no longer handle on his own and checked himself into the Menninger Clinic. Released in time for pre-season training, Favre had the full support of Packer coach Mike Holmgren. While the two had clashed in their beginning at Green Bay, Mariucci may have helped bridge the gap in their relationship. Once Favre felt he had Holmgren's vote of confidence, he went on to become a premier quarterback in the NFL, winning the 1996-97 Most Valuable Player Award.
