Q.Give us an example of men using their spiritual gifts and God-given talents to serve those in need.

A. Four nights a week and on Saturday mornings, a group of men at our church gathers to repair automobiles. Our "Cars Ministry" takes vehicles donated by members of the congregation, repairs them and then gives them to people in need—mainly single mothers. This team of mechanics (many who have worked a full day at car repair shops) also provides free car repair and maintenance for people recommended by our church benevolence board.

The ministry was started by a young man in our church who simply saw a need: reliable transportation for people who couldn't afford it. He had both mechanical skills and a passion for helping others. He pulled together some other Christian mechanics and cast a vision for using those skills to do something to serve Christ. Today, about 100 volunteers serve God and our church through the Cars Ministry.

These men have found not only fulfillment that comes from serving in their area of giftedness, but they have also forged strong relationships with the other men who serve alongside them. After they finish repairing cars, they have small group Bible studies. They're finding that when you pour yourself out into serving others, you always seem to walk away filled up.

Can you point to other examples of this servant spirit in your church?

They abound. A Hall of Fame football player rocks babies in our nursery so their parents can attend our seeker services. A certified financial planner serves in our Good Sense ministry, helping folks get their finances in order so that they can be good stewards.

What's the payoff?

Finding and using your spiritual gifts helps the church, serves others, strengthens your character, and helps you to grow in your relationship with God.

—Bill Hybels is the senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois.
