Key Bible Verse: Do not be conformed to the world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2). Bonus Reading: James 1:19-25

After clearing the supper table, we read our Scripture text (today's Key Bible Verse). As I shared J. B. Phillips's paraphrase, "Do not allow the world to squeeze you into its mold," Nate, our 14-year-old, interrupted.

"Well, that's why I'm quitting my ball team. I know how disappointed you are. I know you'd be happier if I was some kinda superstar. But I'm just not! Okay?"

"Not true, Nate," my wife, Judy, said calmly. "Dad just doesn't like you quitting something you begin."

"I blew it," Nate said slowly. "I love playing ball, but I don't like the competition one bit. I liked the idea of wearing a uniform and being an athlete, but it's never gonna happen. I wish I'd known this before I began."

Judy asked for her son, "What do you think, Dad?"

My words surprised me. "Well, I think you should talk to your coach and tell him what you've told us."

In a society that esteems athletes, artists like Nate have a tougher time finding their place. You don't sew a felt paintbrush on your varsity jacket. But Nate chose not to squeeze himself into the world's mold, and for that I'm proud of him.

Personal Challenge:
  • How do you challenge your kids? How do you praise them?

Thought to Apply: A man does not know what he is saying until he is not saying.
