My Spirit Was Showing
Egos
John Ashcroft

Key Bible Verse: A man's pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor (Proverbs 29:23). Bonus Reading: Isaiah 57:15; 66:2

I was at the airport, trying to board a delayed TWA flight. The agent looked at my ticket, which had a connecting flight in St. Louis. "You won't make your connection," he said. "I'm going to put you on the later flight out of St. Louis."

"When does the flight arrive in Washington?" I asked.

"Around midnight."

I hate arriving in Washington at midnight; besides, there was a good chance I could still make the tight connection in St. Louis. "If we leave when you say we're going to, I'll make the connection," I argued; "I want you to honor my ticket for the earlier connection."

"You won't make it," he insisted. "If I know you'll miss the next flight, I have to schedule you for a later one."

My temper started to rise until somebody from the back of the luggage-laden line called out, "Yeah, he thinks he can do anything because he's a senator."

That stopped me cold. I backed down. There are only two times when the poison of arrogance pollutes—when you're wrong, and when you're right.

I later handwrote a letter to the ticket agent and apologized. I knew I needed to ask forgiveness for my arrogant spirit.

Personal Challenge:
  • Do you make a good representative for the faith you profess?

Thought to Apply:If you are willing to admit you're all wrong when you are, you're all right.
