Handling Huard Times
Egos
Brock Huard
Saturday, June 24, 2000

Editor's note: In 1998, Huard started the college football season as a Heisman Trophy candidate and the man whose arm would carry the Washington Huskies to an outstanding season. But it just didn't work out that way. A weak running game and a depleted offensive line at UW contributed to a tough season for Brock and the Huskies. They skidded to a 6-6 season. Huard threw as many interceptions (15) as touchdown passes. He took most of the blame as the fans and media failed to realize the great loss of talent around him from the previous year.

Q. You experienced a miserable senior year with the Huskies and a lot of press criticism. How were you able to handle that?

A. You learn a lot about yourself and your faith when it's tested through adversity. A lot of people wanted me to vent, to talk about why things weren't going well. But one of the main things I learned is that when you have true humility you don't need to vent, to point fingers. I remember asking my fiancee, now my wife [Molly], "What good will it possibly do to pop off about the situation?" Some times humility means closing your mouth and grinding through, even though it's an uphill grind."

You got a chance to stay in Washington and play professionally. Your high school, college and pro teams' fields are within 40 minutes of each other. How do you feel about being a Seattle Seahawk now, competing with Jon Kitna and Glenn Foley for quarterback time? Does this give you a fresh chance to prove yourself?

I'm feeling at peace with my marriage, my friends and family and my job. It's refreshing and it's humbling. I've been afforded the opportunity I dreamed about and wanted my whole life: to play high school, college, and pro football. I feel at peace and quite humbled because I know I'm where I'm supposed to be.

—Brock Huard is a quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.
