A Team—Even in Tennis Meshing Path to Victory Thursday, June 29, 2000

Key Bible Verse: "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20). Bonus Reading: Matthew 18:18-20
When Michael Chang won the 1989 French Open, he became the youngestat 17 years, 3 monthsever to win a Grand Slam tennis event. In 1991 and '92 his ranking hovered in the top five. But after a couple of losses, he talked with parents Betty and Joe, and brother Carl, who's also his coach, to evaluate.
Michael says, "It really struck me about the importance of a team. My team on the road consists of my brother, mom and dad. We hadn't prepared any differently [physically], but in those earlier tournaments we had a great deal of strength, unity and peace. In San Francisco, Carl and I read the Bible and prayed with some of his friends. At Indian Wells, we prayed as a family before I'd go out to play. And at Lipton, we'd get together with others for evening devotions.
"So we vowed to work as a team and focus on God. We took that mentality into the U.S. Open, and although I didn't win, we came away feeling that God's work was done. It's difficult to handle things by yourself, whether it's a tournament or a test. There really needs to be that kind of team."
