He's Your Roommate?
Crossing Racial Lines
Clarence Shuler
Thursday, May 18, 2000

Key Bible Verse: His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace (Ephesians 2:15b). Bonus Reading: Ephesians 2:11-19

When I was playing basketball in Africa for Sports Ambassadors, we averaged four to six hours of sleep each night. Every day, the team played a game and/or conducted a basketball clinic. In St. Louis, Senegal, our game for that evening was canceled. I went straight to bed. Elridge and Ken, my roommates, went out on the streets to witness.

They returned late with two Muslim boys of 16 or 17. One of the boys asked why Ken, who was white, was in the room. Elridge told them Ken was our roommate. These boys couldn't believe it. Then Elridge really "blew them away" by telling them that Ken was our brother because of Jesus Christ! This they couldn't accept. They stayed and asked questions until three o'clock in the morning. The love of Christ that can overcome racism was shaking the foundations of their faith in their religion.

Early the next morning they woke us up, saying they wanted to ask Jesus to forgive them for their sins and come into their lives as their Lord.

Personal Challenge:
  • What is our motivation for loving others?

Thought to Apply: One sign and wonder that alone can prove the power of the gospel is that of reconciliation. Hindus … Islamic saints cannot duplicate the miracle of black and white together, of racial injustice being swept away by the power of the gospel.

—VINAY SAMUEL (Indian pastor and educator)
