The Shrink Who Didn't Convictions Harold J. Sala Tuesday, May 2, 2000
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:20-25
As a physician in the '20s and '30s," writes Leslie Stobbe, the bushy-browed Swiss Paul Tournier "became convinced that the usual approach of diagnosing an illness and prescribing medicine was not enough." He believed that life can't be separated into compartments labeled body, soul and spirit. Moral disobedience to God's purpose has physical consequences. He began writing down his experiences.
"He submitted his first draft to six friends, who discouraged him from publishing it. Disheartened, he let the manuscript lie. One day, Tournier's wife went to a friend's house to ask for prayer that her husband would gain the courage to submit the manuscript to a publisher. Hearing of this, Tournier began submitting it. The third publisher accepted it and success came almost overnight."
In spite of professional criticism and hostile reviews, he stood by his convictions and refused to use "psycho babble" to lessen the impact of the biblical concept of sin. He led the way in a biblical approach to spiritual restoration and mental healing.

- What do you do when you know you have to "go against the flow"? What gives you courage?
Thought to Apply: They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers.
