Q.How do you establish a solid mentoring relationship?
A.Have a goal. Decide where you want to be a year, five years from now. A mentor can't help you if you don't know what you want.
Have a plan. Meet regularly. Decide together how frequently you'll meet and for how long. Before each meeting ends, plan what you'll cover next time. How long will you continue to meet?
Build trust. Honor confidentiality, be punctual, make good use of meeting time, keep your word.
Be a good listener. The mentor, to gain full understanding of the protege's situation. The protege, to gain the full benefit of the counsel.
Ann Hibbard, president of Hibbard Communications Group, helps people with relationship skills.
