Key Bible Verse: But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed (Ephesians 5:23a). Genesis 39:6b-12

Just turned 13, I was enjoying a short vacation with Dad at my uncle's north woods cottage. Uncle Harold got the notion that his nephew might like to look over his favorite playing cards, featuring a gallery of well-endowed naked women. As I was gawking, Dad walked into the room and took in the situation. "Harold," he exploded, "how could you do a lousy thing like this?"

Harold, an artist, was stunned. "Reg, get off your high horse. He's a young man. You can't shield him forever!"

To Dad, here was his own brother callously exposing his son to a pornographic display. "Pack your bags, John," Dad fumed. "We're going home."

A few minutes later we crawled into our small boat and pulled away. But a hundred yards from the shore, Dad suddenly yanked on the tiller handle and said grimly, "John, we're going back."

Uncle Harold trudged down to the dock to find out what had gone wrong. The two brothers met and reached out into a prolonged embrace. Few words were spoken or needed. Never again would Harold underestimate Dad's intense sense of right and wrong. We unloaded the boat and completed our vacation—the air wonderfully cleared.

Personal Challenge:
  • What would you have done in John's situation?

Thought to Apply: It is important that people know what you stand for. It is equally important that they know what you won't stand for.
