Taking the Fight to Congress Convictions John D. Beckett Friday, May 5, 2000

Key Bible Verse: We want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up (Daniel 3:18b). Bonus Reading: Daniel 6:6-10
In 1993, the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission issued guidelines affecting religion in the U.S. workplace. I learned about them just before the close of the 60-day period for public comment. Angered that a handful of bureaucrats could shut down workplace Bible studies or bar prayer before meetings, I wrote to the EEOC. But their proposal was set to sail through Congress.
Then I learned that while the public could no longer comment, members of Congress could. I met with former representative Mark Siljander, who jumped into the fray. The January 1994 snowstorm that paralyzed Washington gave us time to get the attention of supportive members of Congress.
CBN News sent a camera crew to our company. I was interviewed for a story showing activities that might have to be abandoned. Major TV news programs picked it up. Radio talk shows and the Wall Street Journal interviewed me.
Congressional offices and the EEOC were besieged with mail and phone calls. The Senate voted 100 to 0 to cut off funding to the EEOC for promulgation of its guidelines! The House followed with an overwhelming vote. The EEOC withdrew the guidelines.

- How does your faith show at work?
Thought to Apply: The lions showed no interest in Daniel. Why should they? After all, he was nothing but backbone and grit.
