"I Feel Empty"

Key Bible Verse: "What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?" (Mark 8:36). Bonus Reading: Matthew 13:44-46

Stephen and I bumped into each other at a hotel. An executive in a hospital corporation, Stephen and Becky, a stunning couple, had moved to Nashville three years earlier and started attending our Sunday school class.

Finding we both had some extra minutes, we sat down in the lounge to "get caught up." Stephen said his company was about to go public and he could walk away from the deal with millions of dollars. "But you know what?" Stephen dropped his voice, "Somehow, I feel empty."

The previous Friday, Stephen confided, his picture had appeared on page one of the paper's business section. He and Becky had attended a black-tie benefit where they'd been besieged by well-wishers and backslappers. But they'd left early at his insistence. Next morning, responding to a mystified Becky's questions, Stephen said something important was missing in his life.

"Stephen," I finally said, "You and Becky have religion, but you need God. Until you have a relationship with Him for yourself, one on one, you'll always feel that emptiness."

"I need to think about it," Stephen said, standing and retrieving his briefcase. Then, looking me squarely in the eye, he added, "But I promise I will."

Personal Challenge:

  • Are you like Stephen?

Thought to Apply: You have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.
